Disco Years

In the Collectors Project Room, Photology is featuring a special installation of vintage works dedicated to the epic of Disco of the 70’s and 80’s. The aim of this exhibition is to remind sex, art, drugs, pop+disco culture that New York experienced at that time. Selected photo-artists, Bertoglio, Galella, Gorgoni, Makos and Warhol, knew how to catch the first sign of a changing world, a flavour of “total culture”, of “massive snobbishness”.
Among avant-gard night clubs (like initially Max’s Kansas City and later Studio 54), New York becomes the world outpost of this new culture, in an ongoing downtown – uptown shift. A cultural crossover system is generated through new experiences: as poetic and literary visions by Beat Generation influence pop music, on the other hand the new free gay culture overwhelmes the art of the most renowned New York galleries. The change New York has experienced in this historical moment is one of the most radical revolution of the western society at the turn of the millennium.
Selected works were exhibited in Italy in 2017 (“The NY Scene”, Palazzo del Governatore, Parma), and will travel to the US in 2020 (“Studio 54: Night Magic”, Brooklyn Museum, New York).
